Sprucing up the home

When you can't afford to move, sprucing up your home is a good way to inject change into your house giving a fresh feel to every room. Staying put and improving rather than moving is the only alternative left at the moment, as although the housing market is starting to stabilise and house prices are beginning to rise, without job security, moving – especially up the property ladder – is simply not an option at the moment. Therefore clever interior design that can completely change the feel of a room, without costing a fortune, is becoming more popular.

Don't run before you can walk: start small. If you can't afford a new carpet or to switch to trendy wood flooring a rug can instantly change the appearance of a room, adding colour and a new lease of life. Modern Rugs for example, has some great rugs available on their website, both contemporary and traditional and they won't cost a fortune either.

Another change is lighting. Old and outmoded lighting can age a room as well as casting ugly shadows. Side lights, lamps and halogen lights all give off their own kind of light effect and whether you want soft mood lighting or powerful focused spot lights, the overall feel of a room is dramatically changed just by being lit in a different manner.

Natural lighting is also important to how a room feels. So getting the right kind of curtains or blinds can also affect a room. Muslin diffuses light, wooden blinds are modern and stylish and heavy curtains are also making a comeback and can add drama and character to an otherwise plain room.

Mirrors can cleverly create a feeling of space and increased size. They also reflect light and add interest to an otherwise plain wall. The colour, size and design of the mirror and frame also has an impact on the character of the room, adding either contemporary minimalism or baroque glamour.

Finally, changing the colour of the walls, even if you can only afford to create a 'feature wall' will have the biggest effect on the design and feel of a room. Wallpaper can be as brash, old-fashioned or simple as you desire and paint can easily affect the mood of the room, from relaxing to invigorating. Feature walls are a clever way of drawing the eye to a particular section of the room and adding character without a huge cost.
